My work is an examination of reality, regardless if it only exists
in my imagination or from the direct observation of the senses.
When I take photographs, I am considering my perception of
the world and also looking beyond the sensory capacities I possess
to uncover new images that escape our everyday view regardless
of if I am using a macro lens or looking inward to personal
struggles and the metaphoric value that an image can have.
Many different qualities and movements influence me. If I am
looking through my lens, I might be thinking of Taoist or
Buddhist philosophy and create a simple composition; I might have
a song or a painter's work in mind when I am photographing a subject
and it will influence the shot. I prefer to have only a loose idea of the
end result at the beginning and see where that takes me on a shoot.
Accordingly, I photograph more like an improvisational jazz musician
with a style that is closer to photojournalism rather than being one who
seeks to meticulously control every aspect of a set. I find the lack of
preconceived notions and rules invigorating and complimentary to my
technical side where precision and logic in problem solving are
paramount.
